On January 4, 2025, the Orlu community witnessed a historic moment as shareholders and medical staff of Orlu United Medical Centre (OUMC) celebrated the grand opening of their newly constructed hospital. The event marked a significant milestone in the region’s healthcare sector, symbolizing progress and a renewed hope for quality medical care.

The day began with a free medical outreach program at 8:00 AM, organized to provide immediate care to the community. Hundreds of residents benefited from free consultations, medications, and minor treatments, underscoring the hospital’s mission to address the healthcare needs of the underserved.

At 1:00 PM, a solemn Holy Mass, presided over by the Catholic Bishop of Orlu Diocese, Most Rev. Augustine T. Ukwuoma, was celebrated to formally inaugurate the hospital. Rev. Fr. Damian Ezeani, in his homily, reflected on the theme, “All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of God,” emphasizing that healthcare is a tangible manifestation of God’s love and care for His people.

Rev. Fr. Samuel Edeh blessed the shareholders, commending their sacrifices in bringing the vision of OUMC to life. Similarly, Rev. Fr. Faith Ugorji blessed the medical staff, encouraging them to embrace compassion and dedication in their service.

Subsequently, Bishop Ukwuoma delivered an inspiring speech, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the project. He later blessed and consecrated a newly built grotto on the hospital grounds, providing a tranquil space for prayer and reflection. The bishop also led the official ribbon-cutting ceremony to declare the hospital open.

Following the inauguration, the hospital’s CEO and founder, Dr. Chika Ugbaja, guided the bishop and other dignitaries on a tour of the facility. During the tour, the bishop sprinkled holy water across the hospital’s sections, symbolizing God’s protection over the new establishment. Guests were impressed by the hospital’s state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.

In an interview, Dr. Ugbaja shared the inspiration behind OUMC, highlighting the inadequate healthcare services in Nigeria, particularly in Imo State. She explained how preventable deaths due to poor medical care motivated her to act. A seasoned medical professional who had served in the United States for many years, Dr. Ugbaja expressed gratitude to God for the grace to return and serve her community. Together with the shareholders, she envisioned a hospital that would provide life-saving services and transform healthcare in Orlu.

The day ended with a vibrant celebration, featuring cultural performances, music, and dance. The community came together to express their gratitude and joy, marking the inauguration of OUMC as a new chapter in Orlu’s healthcare journey.
OUMC’s opening is a testament to what is possible when vision meets determination, and it is poised to bring lasting benefits to the people of Orlu and beyond.
