On January 5th, 2025, the entire parishioners of St. Patrick’s Catholic Parish Amucha came together in thanksgiving to celebrate the 40th Priestly Anniversary of its bishop, Most Rev. Augustine Ukwuoma. The milestone event, held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Amucha, the bishop’s home parish, was a day filled with profound gratitude, joy, and reflection. The celebration began with a solemn Mass at 9:00 AM, presided over by Bishop Ukwuoma. The church was filled to capacity with priests, religious, dignitaries, and faithful from across the diocese and beyond who gathered to honor the bishop’s decades of selfless service.

In his homily, Rev. Fr. Dr. Anthony Osuji set the tone for the day by reflecting on the Feast of the Epiphany, tying its themes of revelation and offering to the bishop’s journey of priesthood. Fr. Osuji recalled the words of the late Most Rev. Gregory Ochiagha, who urged the faithful to view their lives as gifts to others. He noted that Bishop Ukwuoma’s life and ministry exemplify this spirit, describing the anniversary as a testament to God’s grace, which has sustained him through 40 years of priestly service.

The homily also highlighted key milestones in Bishop Ukwuoma’s life, from his ordination in 1983 to his leadership as the bishop of Orlu. Although the 40th Priestly Anniversary was due to be celebrated in 2023, it was postponed due to other commitments. Fr. Osuji further noted that this celebration coincided with two other significant milestones in the bishop’s life: his 15th Episcopal Anniversary and his 70th birthday, making the occasion even more special.

During the Mass, Bishop Ukwuoma administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to candidates who had been well-prepared by the parish. The liturgical proceedings created a sacred and uplifting atmosphere, deepening the spiritual significance of the day.

As the Mass concluded, the parish priest expressed heartfelt gratitude to all who attended, and the parish secretary delivered a welcome address. The secretary praised Bishop Ukwuoma, describing him as a beloved son of Amucha and a dedicated shepherd whose ministry has profoundly impacted both the spiritual and social development of the community.

A notable highlight of the event was the presence of the Governor of Imo State, His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodimma. In his address, the governor lauded Bishop Ukwuoma’s unwavering commitment to the Church and assured his continued support for the Church’s mission.

Following the Mass, a photo session captured cherished moments with the bishop, priests, religious, and dignitaries. A grand reception followed on the church premises, featuring cultural performances, music, and dances. The atmosphere was alive with celebration as the bishop received numerous gifts from individuals and groups, including priests and religious from Amucha, as well as representatives from parishes he had previously served.
The event was not just a celebration of Bishop Ukwuoma’s personal milestones but also a communal expression of gratitude for his humility, leadership, and steadfast dedication to his flock.
The day concluded with a renewed sense of unity and hope for the future of the diocese. Prayers were offered for God’s continued grace and strength for Bishop Ukwuoma as he continues to shepherd his people with faith and devotion.
