Abuja, Nigeria – The Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, was officially received as the Ambassador of the Holy See to Nigeria by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

In a solemn diplomatic ceremony at the State House, Abuja, Archbishop Crotty presented his Letter of Credence to the President, alongside the High Commissioners of Canada and Sierra Leone and the Ambassador of Ethiopia.

During the warm and cordial exchange, Archbishop Crotty conveyed the greetings of His Holiness, Pope Francis, along with the Holy Father’s prayers for the President and the people of Nigeria.

President Tinubu, in his response, expressed deep appreciation for the contributions of the Catholic Church in Nigeria, particularly in the field of education.

A Letter of Credence is a formal diplomatic document by which a Head of State accredits an Ambassador to another Head of State. As the Pope’s representative, the Apostolic Nuncio serves as the official link between the Holy See and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in line with international diplomatic law.

The Holy See, as the supreme authority of the Catholic Church, continues to maintain strong relations with Nigeria, promoting peace, development, and interfaith dialogue for the common good of the nation.
